The rapid growth of Delhi in recent times has resulted in significant increase in environmental Pollution. It is widely perceived that the problem is threatening to get out of hand. Hence, effective and co-ordinated measures for controlling Pollution need to be put in place without delay. In view of the seriousness of the issue, Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has setup the Continuous Air Quality Monitoring Station based on Differential optical absorption Spectroscopy. The system is based on proven technology having approval from leading certifying agencies like US EPA, MCRET and TUV.
The CAAQM stations were installed in 2010 and started collecting data from 1st October 2010. The analyser were under stabilisation and commissioning and valid data started from January 1, 2011. The system has been configured to monitor Sulphur Dioxide (SO2), Ozone (O3), Nitric Oxide (NO), Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2), Formaldehyde (FOR), Benzene (BEN), Toluene (TOL), P-xylene (pXy), Mercury (Hg). The system is connected with a computer and the CPCB website for the public viewing. The measuring path was reoriented towards Doctor Hedgewar Aarogya Sansthan Hospital in March 2016 due to obstructions in previous path alignment. The new path length is 150 Mts. between the emitter and the receiver. The DOAS system is located at latitude 28.6556036 and longitude of 77.2949124.
